FRANK GEHRY AND THE BEEKMAN TOWER

-Frank Gehry was born on February 28, 1929, in Toronto. Frank was creative at a young age, building imaginary homes and cities from items found in his grandfather's store. His early experiments are perhaps best embodied by the “renovations” he made to his own home in Santa Monica. Gehry’s trademark style had become buildings that resemble undulating free-form sculpture. An example is the Beekman Tower.

-8 Spruce Street, originally known as Beekman Tower is a skyscraper in New York. 8 Spruce Street is one of the tallest residential towers in the world. The building contains a public elementary school but above the elementary school, the building is a 904-unit luxury residential tower clad in stainless steel. There are also public plazas on both the east and the west sides of the building.

CHRIST THE REDEEMER

Christ the Redeemer is a colossal statue (30 metres) of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro. Christ the Redeemer is located at the top of the Corcovado Mountain. The Statue is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world. The idea of building a Christ statue was first suggested in 1850 to honour
princess Isabel, the princess regent of Brazil but the idea was dismissed. It wasn't until 1920 that the idea resurfaced from the Catholic community and was finally accepted and put into practice. The construction began in 1922 and it was completed in 1931. It is an important tourist attraction that attracts 1.800.000 people per year. The record number of tourists in a single day was at Easter 2011, when 14.000 people went to see the statue.

THE ORIGINS OF SURNAMES

In the early years of the Middle Ages, everyone knew his neighbors and there was little need for last names. But as the population expanded and the towns grew, a need arose to find ways to differentiate between two people who shared the same first name. Surnames can be grouped into four categories: PATRONYMIC (identify people as their father's children), LOCATIVE (identify people based upon where they live), OCCUPATIONAL (identify people based upon their jobs) and NICKNAMES (adjectivies that helped to describe a person). My surname is Verde (green) and it's typical of Naples but it's also found in Sicily. It comes from the Germanic BERT which means ''shining''. From Bert it has become Verde thanks to the ''betacismo'' (substitution from the B to the V) and thanks to the ''tetacismo'' (substitution from the T to the D). Alternatively, it could be a nickname on someone who was particularly fond of dressing in green

PANCAKE DAY

Pancake Day is a festivity on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent, that are the 40 days before Easter. On this day in UK there is the Pancake race, when people run with a pancake in a pan and when they run, they have to toss the pancake so they  throw the pancake in the air and catch it in the pan. Its origin tells of a housewife, hearing the bell for the confession, dashing to the Church still holding her frying pan containing a pancake. The first run was in the year 1445. It is not known where the original start line was but the finish line was at the Church door.

MEDIA LITERACY

In this advertisement  there is a workplace where there is a house on a crane with the writing '' With a soup you're always at home '' and at the top right there is a soup. The colors in this picture are grey and dark yellow. The values of this ads are the family and the work, but the objective is to convince you to buy the soup. I don't really like soup but I like the meaning of this picture, because it's for people that work and don't spend time with their family, parents and children. I think that my parents would like this ads too because they work but they love spend time with me and my brother.

STRANGE NEW YEAR TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD

In Japan they ring all of their bells 108 times in alignment with the Buddhist belief that this brings cleanness. It’s also considered good to be smiling going into the New Year as it supposedly brings good luck.

In Switzerland they celebrate the New Year by dropping ice cream on the floor.

In Colombia they carry their suitcases around with them all day in hopes of having a travel filled year.

In Ecuador they celebrate the New Year by burning paper filled scarecrows at midnight. They also burn photographs from the last year. All in the name of good fortune.
